To compare outcomes with surgical versus transcatheter treatment of severe aortic stenosis in patients at low surgical risk, researchers conducted a randomized trial at three Nordic centers in 280 patients aged >70 years (mean age, 79 years; 53% male) with severe aortic stenosis. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with a self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) prosthesis or open surgery (SAVR). The mean Society of Thoracic Surgeons Predicted Risk of Mortality score was 3.0, and 82% were considered low-risk (score <4). Several of the authors are either employees of the TAVR prosthesis manufacturer or report receiving speaker fees or contracts from one of the prosthesis manufacturers.
