Researchers used data from eight U.S. children's hospitals to compare the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of pneumococcal meningitis (PM) before and after the 2010 introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13).
From 2007 to 2013, 1207 children aged ≤18 years were diagnosed with invasive pneumococcal disease, and of these, 173 had PM. The number of PM cases per year did not change after introduction of the vaccine; however, the proportion of invasive pneumococcal disease cases with PM increased significantly from 12% before to 18% after. Although the proportion of PCV13 serotype PM cases decreased from 54% to 27%, serotype 19A (included in the PCV13 vaccine) remained the most common serotype. Of 10 children with the …
