Although relatively uncommon, breast cancer in young women is associated with poorer survival. When such women receive diagnoses of breast cancer, those with affected family members may be concerned that this family history may adversely affect prognosis. Investigators in the U.K. conducted a prospective study in 2850 women aged ≤40 with breast cancer diagnosed between 2000 and 2008. Positive family history (+FH) was defined as having a first- or second-degree relative with breast or ovarian cancer. Distant disease-free interval (DDFI) was defined as time from diagnosis to relapse caused by distant disease or death from breast cancer. Median follow-up was 5.9 years.
