Data from single-center studies show high rates of gastritis in patients with celiac disease. To further investigate this possible association, researchers evaluated the prevalence of two types of Helicobacter pylori–negative gastritis — chronic active gastritis (CAG) and chronic inactive gastritis (CIG) — and lymphocytic gastritis (LG) in patients with and without evidence of celiac disease (CD) on duodenal biopsy. Data were from 287,503 concurrent gastric and duodenal biopsy specimens submitted to a national pathology laboratory during a 6-year period.

Celiac disease (duodenal Marsh score of 3) was found in 3948 patients (1.4%).
