Many emergency departments (EDs) track return visits, but most analyses are limited to a single institution, health system, or insurance plan. To determine how often patients return to any ED within the same state, researchers reviewed data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database for 2006 to 2010. The analysis included 58 million patients discharged from EDs in six states for which linked data on subsequent ED visits and admissions were available.
The three-day revisit rate was 8.2%, and of these revisits, 32% were at different hospitals. Notably, 2.7% of patients returned to an ED within one day, and, of these, 37% were admitted. At 30 days, the revisit rate increased to 20%. Th…
