Ebola has been the major focus of public health news out of West Africa since the largest outbreak in history accelerated in 2014. When encountering ill patients arriving from this region, however, clinicians must remain aware of the many other infectious diseases that are endemic there. To define the spectrum of illness in travelers and new immigrants from Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea before and during the 2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak and inform differential diagnosis, researchers reviewed GeoSentinel Surveillance Network data from September 2009 through August 2014. This network involves 57 travel and tropical medicine clinics in 25 countries on 6 continents.
