Patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) frequently have some manifestations of systemic disease and may progress to develop symptoms that fulfill criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In my experience, systemic features are more common in patients with subacute cutaneous LE (SCLE) than in those with chronic LE. Multiple studies of SLE incidence and prevalence have been published, but there are few examining CLE and none comparing the epidemiology of the two diseases.
