Investigators from the National Pediatric Readiness Project surveyed emergency department (ED) nurse managers to assess the pediatric readiness of U.S. EDs. A 100-point weighted score was used to assess pediatric readiness in terms of coordination of care, physician/nurse training, quality improvement activities, patient safety initiatives, policies and procedures, and availability of pediatric equipment.
Of 4137 assessments completed in 2013 (response rate, 83%), the median score was 69, an increase from a median of 55 in 2003. The score increased with annual pediatric volume: EDs with pediatric volumes <1800 had a median score of 61, while EDs with volumes ≥10,000 had a median score of 90.
