Periorificial (perioral) dermatitis (POD) is an idiopathic inflammatory eruption characterized by monomorphic small papules or papulopustules clustered around the mouth and nose and, in more severe cases, around the eyes. Although it is not uncommon in children, including infants, most studies describe POD in young adult women. In the current retrospective medical record review, researchers described 222 children identified with POD during a 12-year period.
Patient age ranged from 3 months to 18 years (average age at presentation, 6.6 years); 55% were girls, and 62% were Caucasian. Medical histories showed atopic dermatitis in 29%, asthma in 15%, and corticosteroid use prior to POD onset in 58%. The most common treatments included monotherap…
