Depression following stroke. Each year, 700,000 individuals in the U.S. suffer a stroke, of whom roughly 30% develop depression within 5 years. Depression after stroke is associated with greater morbidity and mortality, whereas treatment of poststroke depression enhances functional capacities, cognitive performance, and survival.
