Providing highly effective reversible contraception to women at or near birth may lower risk for unintended pregnancy within the next 12 months. To assess the benefits and risks of intrauterine device (IUD) placement at cesarean delivery, investigators randomized 112 women seeking IUDs for postpartum contraception to placement during cesarean delivery or at 6 weeks postpartum. Participants chose either a levonorgestrel-releasing IUD (79%) or a copper IUD (21%). Following delivery of the placenta, the IUD was inserted through the hysterotomy and the strings were pushed through the cervix using a ring forceps.
