In patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), neuroimaging studies have shown hyperactivity in the amygdala and some other limbic areas and hypoactivity in prefrontal brain regions. These authors used diffusion tensor imaging to investigate the structural integrity of the uncinate fasciculus (UF), a major white-matter tract connecting limbic and prefrontal regions and linked to emotion regulation.
Participants were 52 women: 26 patients with BPD and no bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia; and 26 controls without psychiatric disorders.
