Most people with heart failure in the U.S. are elderly and have a range of coexisting conditions, functional limitations, and cognitive impairment. In this analysis from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute–supported Cardiovascular Health Study, investigators assessed the prevalence of these factors and their association with mortality in a cohort of individuals with heart failure diagnosed between 1990 and 2002. Among the 558 individuals with incident heart failure after enrollment (and all baseline data), the mean age was 79.2 years; 52% were men.
