In a quasi-experimental study, researchers assessed implementation of an antibiotic stewardship program targeting use of third-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolones for community acquired pneumonia in nontrauma emergency patients at a German university hospital. The intervention included (1) revision of hospital-wide antibiotic prescribing guidelines to discourage use of third-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolones and encourage use of penicillin or ampicillin/sulbactame, (2) access to guidelines on intranet and pocket cards, and (3) educational programs led by infectious disease specialists.
