Gastric cancer is presumed to develop via precancerous mucosal changes called Correa's cascade, which includes successive stages of normal mucosa, minor mucosal change, gastritis, atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia, and cancer.
To evaluate the risk for gastric cancer at each cascade stage, investigators in Sweden linked data on all gastric biopsies for nonmalignant indications in the national pathologic disease register with national patient registers. Of 405,211 eligible patients identified, 1599 developed gastric cancer.
