Five Hundred and Fifty Twins with Rosacea

Rosacea has genetic as well as environmental causes as predisposing factors.

Twin studies compare concordance and discordance in identical versus fraternal twin pairs. These studies help sort out environmental from genetic factors that contribute to the incidence and severity of rosacea.

Fraternal and identical twin pairs with rosacea were examined by dermatologists and interviewed at the annual Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. Of 275 twin pairs (550 individuals), 233 pairs were identical, with a mean rosacea score of 2.46. The other 42 twin pairs were fraternal twins with a mean rosacea score of 0.75. Identical twins were significantly more likely than fraternal twins to have similar rosacea scores.
