Risk stratification of patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is recommended by guidelines. Although multiple scoring systems have been proposed, those most commonly used are the Rockall scores — one calculated before endoscopy (clinical Rockall, or CR) and another after endoscopy (endoscopic Rockall, or ER) — and the Glasgow-Blatchford score (GBS), calculated before endoscopy.
In a prospective study, investigators in the Netherlands compared these three scores in their ability to predict the need for therapy (endoscopic, surgical, or radiological intervention or blood transfusion) in 520 patients presenting with UGIB to one of three hospitals.
