The cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is designed to provide statistics on the health and nutritional status of the noninstitutionalized civilian U.S. population. It is conducted through household interviews and physical examination, including biospecimen collection. Based on the NHANES 1999–2006 sample, the estimated national prevalence of HIV infection among adults aged 18 to 49 was 0.47%.
The 2007–2012 sample (expanded to include individuals aged 18–59) yielded an estimated prevalence of 0.39% (95% confidence interval, 0.22% to 0.2%).
