In recent years, attention has been focused on the cardiovascular safety of diabetes drugs. In this observational population-based study from Taiwan, researchers identified type 2 diabetic patients who had initially received metformin monotherapy, with eventual addition of either a sulfonylurea or a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor (e.g., sitagliptin [Januvia], saxagliptin [Onglyza]). About 10,000 sulfonylurea recipients and 10,000 DPP-4 inhibitor recipients, closely matched through propensity scoring, were compared.
