In general, paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) have been inferior to “limus-eluting” stents, but the results in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients have been more conflicting. In this manufacturer-funded, randomized study, investigators in India compared a PES with a current-generation, everolimus-eluting stent (EES) in 1830 patients with DM and coronary artery disease.
Insulin-requiring DM was present in 40% of patients, and the mean duration of diabetes was 6.3 years. At 1-year follow-up, the rate of target-vessel failure was inferior with PES compared with EES (5.6% vs. 2.9%).
