In the U.S., some 600,000 female tubal sterilization procedures are performed annually, most often laparoscopically or hysteroscopically if outside the delivery setting. In the latter approach, an implant containing a stainless steel inner coil is inserted into each fallopian tube under direct hysteroscopic visualization. In a study of female sterilization procedures performed in New York State between 2005 and 2013, researchers assessed rates of immediate postoperative complications, unintended pregnancy, and reoperation within 1 year in 8048 women undergoing hysteroscopic sterilization compared with 44,278 women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization.
