Data are lacking on the risk for anaphylaxis after vaccination in children and adolescents. To estimate this risk, investigators identified cases of anaphylaxis among patients receiving vaccinations through one of nine healthcare organizations across the U.S. participating in the Vaccine Safety Datalink program. They used strict criteria to define a case of anaphylaxis and confirmed each case by medical record review.
Among 25,173,965 vaccine doses administered between 2009 and 2011, 33 cases of anaphylaxis deemed related to vaccination occurred among patients of all ages (1.31/million doses; 95% confidence interval, 0.9–1.84), including 18 cases (55%) occurring among those aged ≤17 years (1.45/million doses; 95% CI, 0.86–2.29).
