Degenerative cervical myelopathy remains the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in adults worldwide and is one of the most common causes of chronic pain, gait difficulty, and falls in older patients. It is caused by age-related changes to the spinal axis, and the aging of the population is increasing its incidence. Surgical decompression aims to halt and ameliorate symptoms and improve quality of life.
