The 2010 American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Guidelines recommend that all emergency call center dispatchers be trained to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instruction for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (Circulation 2010; 122:S685). To measure how many call centers are able to provide telephone CPR instruction, researchers surveyed 3555 of 5686 centers identified in the U.S. with valid e-mail addresses.
Nearly half (46%) of the 1924 centers that responded to the survey are unable to provide emergency medical instruction by certified dispatcher, and, of these, 31% are unable to transfer calls to a facility that can provide instruction.
