In 1992, the FDA restricted use of silicone gel implants to clinical trials. This moratorium was lifted in 2006, and >75% of breast implants now contain silicone gel, which is perceived to have a more natural look and feel than saline (however, most saline implants have silicone elastomer shells). Breast augmentation is now the most common cosmetic surgery in U.S. women, with 286,000 undergoing the procedure in 2014 (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2014 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report). Implant manufacturers commissioned a systematic review of evidence comparing long-term health outcomes in women with and without silicone gel implants.
