The number of bariatric surgeries performed in adolescents for the treatment of obesity doubled between 2003 and 2009 — from about 800 to 1600 procedures. However, longitudinal data on surgical outcomes are lacking.
Now investigators from the prospective, multicenter Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery study report 3-year outcomes in 228 participants (mean age at enrollment, 17 years; 75% females; 72% white; mean weight, 149 kg; mean body-mass index, 53 kg/m2) who underwent gastric bypass (161 patients) or sleeve gastrectomy (67 patients) between 2007 and 2012.
