It is well established that proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce the risk for upper gastrointestinal bleeding from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but some data suggest they may exacerbate NSAID-associated enteropathy.
Investigators in Japan performed an industry-funded, randomized, placebo-controlled study in 60 healthy volunteers. After a baseline capsule endoscopy (CE), participants were randomized to receive celecoxib (200 mg twice daily) with either rabeprazole (20 mg) or a placebo once daily for 2 weeks, after which the CE was repeated.
