In a single U.S. center, oral cancer was retrospectively identified in 11 out of 7294 patients after a diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was made (7 patients with Crohn disease and 4 with ulcerative colitis). The mean interval between diagnosis of IBD and diagnosis of oral cancer was 17.6 years. Case details were as follows:
Six patients had squamous cell tongue cancers, two had hard palate cancers, and three had sarcoma of the tonsil, buccal mucosa, or mandible.
One patient with tongue cancer had kidney transplant prior to the diagnosis.
