Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic inflammatory disease that commonly affects areas rich in apocrine glands, is associated with smoking, obesity, and, likely, genetic predisposition. HS is understudied and occurs in perhaps 0.97% of the population. Inflammation results in furuncle-like lesions, sinus tracts, and scarring, and has a life-altering impact on quality of life. Therapies have included topical and oral antibiotics, topical cleansers, and retinoids, but none produce adequate control. Extensive surgical exoneration is curative. Some patients have accompanying inflammatory bowel disease; tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists given to these patients sometimes benefit HS as well.
