We previously reported on the Risk Estimator Decision Aid for Atrial Fibrillation (RED-AF) score for prediction of untoward outcomes within 30 days of an emergency department (ED) visit for atrial fibrillation (NEJM JW Emerg Med Nov 2014 and Ann Emerg Med 2015; 65:13). Researchers have now developed a new score, the TrOPs-BAC, to predict mortality in the 30 days after an ED visit for atrial fibrillation.
In a retrospective study of a derivation cohort of 2343 patients and a validation cohort of 1167 patients with atrial fibrillation at 24 EDs in Canada, investigators developed a 6-variable TrOPs-BAC score. The score assigns points as follows:
