Increasingly, patients with localized favorable-risk prostate cancer are being offered “active surveillance” instead of surgery or radiotherapy. In two observational studies, estimated 15-year disease-specific survival rates for patients in active surveillance were 94% and 99%, respectively. Although urologists and oncologists usually guide decision-making for such patients, I've used these studies to support my patients with localized prostate cancer who are considering (or have chosen) active surveillance (NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Mar 2015 and J Clin Oncol 2015; 33:272; NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Dec 2015 and J Clin Oncol 2015; 33:3379).
