Helicobacter pylori infection increases the risk for gastric cancer. The Shandong Intervention Trial, launched in 1995 in rural Linqu, China, documented a 39% reduction in gastric-cancer incidence after 15 years, related to H. pylori treatment. In 2011, investigators initiated a new randomized trial of H. pylori treatment involving Linqu residents aged 25 to 54 years.
According to 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) results, the prevalence of H. pylori infection was 57.6% (105,973 of 183,970 residents). Participants with infection were randomly assigned to receive either 10 days of quadruple therapy — omeprazole, metronidazole, tetracycline, and bismuth — or omeprazole and bismuth with placebo antibiotics. About 89% completed treatment.
