Given the high morbidity and mortality from invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), pneumococcal vaccines are especially important for immunocompromised patients. To better characterize this population, researchers analyzed 7604 episodes of IPD that occurred in metropolitan Toronto and the Peel region of Canada from 1995 to 2012.
IPD incidence was 28% among immunocompromised patients, a statistically significant 12-fold higher than among immunocompetent people. Immunocompromised patients represented 9.3% of the IPD cases among children, 34.5% among young adults, and 29.9% among patients age 65 or older.
