For a number of years, pediatric and government agencies have recommended that newborns leave the hospital in approved car safety seats. Investigators at an academic health center examined 291 mother–child dyads to ascertain the frequency of misuse of these seats. Certified child passenger safety technicians assessed each caregiver's installation of the seat and positioning of the infant in it.
Overall, 95% of caregivers failed to meet at least one of the recommended criteria for safe seat installation or infant positioning. Half of caregivers made at least five errors.
