Symptomatic autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) can lead to progressive liver disease and responds to treatment; is asymptomatic AIH similar?
To compare treatment response and outcomes in symptomatic versus asymptomatic patients with AIH, investigators conducted a retrospective study of 305 patients from a referral hospital in Italy. Asymptomatic presentation was defined as having intermittent mild abnormalities in liver function tests and no symptoms. Symptomatic presentation was defined as having acute symptoms of hepatitis or vague, nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, arthralgia, and malaise.
