The association between β-genus human papilloma virus (β-HPV) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cuSCC) is controversial. It is well known that the β-HPV viruses (responsible for most cervical and anogenital SCC) elaborate viral oncoproteins that block cellular tumor-suppressor proteins, such as P53. Molecular mechanisms explaining how β-HPV might contribute to carcinogenesis remain unclear, although some epidemiological evidence correlates exposure and cuSCC risk.
