Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a common and disabling condition associated with psychiatric hospitalization, substance abuse, and suicidality. Both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are effective for BDD. However, because CBT requires special expertise, few sufferers end up having access to this treatment (twice as many patients have reported receiving SSRIs). In a randomized trial of 94 patients with BDD, researchers compared an Internet-delivered, therapist-assisted CBT program (BDD-NET) with online supportive treatment; both treatments lasted 3 months.
