To investigate the impact of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on maternal morbidity, researchers analyzed outcomes in the Massachusetts pregnancy and birth databases and the ART Clinic Reporting Outcome System. Study groups were the IVF group (13,677 pregnancies conceived with IVF), the subfertile group (8754 pregnancies conceived without IVF in women with histories of fertility treatment), and the fertile group (436,487 pregnancies conceived without IVF in women without histories of fertility treatment). Severe maternal morbidity was defined as occurrence of ≥1 of 25 problems including cardiac, renal, or respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, eclampsia, myocardial infarction, and blood transfusion.
