Zika virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has been described in 26 countries in the Americas. Until the beginning of December 2015, all cases reported in the U.S. were thought to be imported from other endemic areas. However, as a result of heightened surveillance and increased testing of specimens, 30 laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus infection were identified in Puerto Rico, a jurisdiction of the U.S., between November 23, 2015, and January 28, 2016.
