Female sex is associated with poorer outcomes after surgical aortic valve replacement. What about after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)? To find out, investigators conducted a secondary analysis of data from the randomized and nonrandomized PARTNER trials: 2559 patients who were high-risk (cohort A) or inoperable (cohort B). The patients' mean age was 84 years; 52% were men.
At baseline, women had significantly lower rates of hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking, and renal disease — but significantly higher Society of Thoracic Surgeons Predicted Risk of Mortality scores (mean, 11.9% vs. 11.1%).
