An extensive body of literature shows that long-term antidepressant treatment lowers suicide risk in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), although vulnerability to suicidal behavior seems to be independent of depression severity and may be a risk factor for worse antidepressant response. Because controlled antidepressant trials usually exclude suicidal patients, researchers in France conducted a naturalistic, industry-funded, 6-week study of 4041 adults with MDD prescribed a new antidepressant (initial or switched antidepressant). The investigators examined clinician- and patient-rated suicidal ideation, past history of suicide attempts, and antidepressant response.
