Gut dysbiosis — a microbial imbalance implicated in obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome — has recently been suggested in animal studies to play a role in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
To determine whether gut dysbiosis is associated with severity of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis, investigators studied 57 consecutive adults (60% male; median age, 60; 81% had metabolic syndrome) with biopsy-proven NAFLD at a single medical center in France.
