To develop a simple, outcomes-based prognostic model for Parkinson disease (PD), researchers tested a composite outcome measure in a clinic-based group of newly diagnosed PD patients recruited for another study in the Netherlands. External validation was performed in a separate group of community-based, newly diagnosed PD patients in the United Kingdom. The primary outcome was unfavorable prognosis, defined as postural instability, dementia, or death at or before the 5-year assessment (or at the latest clinical assessment if prior to the 5-year follow-up). To construct the model, the researchers used a backward selection strategy that focused on baseline characteristics.
