In the context of the growing Zika virus epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published an update on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Zika virus for pediatric providers. Highlights include the following:
No evidence currently exists for maternal-infant transmission via breast milk, and the potential risk for transmission is outweighed by the benefits of breastfeeding.
Most infected patients are asymptomatic.
Symptoms are typically mild; may include maculopapular rash, fever, arthralgia, and nonpurulent conjunctivitis; and last up to 1 week.
Incidence of maternal-fetal transmission during pregnancy and frequencies of adverse outcomes associated with congenital infection (e.g., microcephaly) are unknown.
