In the ongoing search for therapies that improve long-term survival in patients with acute alcoholic hepatitis, aggressive nutritional supplement has shown some promise.
In the current multicenter study, researchers randomized 136 patients hospitalized with biopsy-proven alcoholic hepatitis to receive intensive enteral nutrition via feeding tube or conventional nutrition (according to local practice) for 14 days. Participants had new onset of jaundice within 3 months, discriminant function ≥32, and daily alcohol consumption >40 g at enrollment. Enteral food composition per 1000 mL consisted of 1500 kcal, 75 g proteins, 170 g carbohydrates, 58 g fats, and 790 mL water; the volume administered was based on participant body weight.
