Ideally, mental disorders (MDs) and substance-use disorders (SUDs) should be addressed in the outpatient setting, but some youth with these conditions require hospitalization. To provide a comprehensive description of such hospitalizations, researchers analyzed data on patients aged 13 to 19 years in the 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database. Data were from community hospitals, defined as short-term, nonfederal, general, and others, including pediatric, public, and academic medical hospitals. Psychiatric and chemical-dependency hospitals were excluded.
