Risk factors associated with acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) in children are unclear. To identify these factors in pediatric ARP and CP, investigators conducted a multinational, cross-sectional study of 301 children, of whom 155 had ARP (≥2 episodes of acute pancreatitis) and 146 had CP.
The key findings were as follows:
Most children with CP (84%) presented with ARP.
The median time of progression from first episode of AP to CP was 1 year.
A family history of CP was more common in children with CP than in those with ARP.
Gene mutations associated with pancreatitis were more common in children with CP than in those with ARP (P<0.001).
