A study of vaccination with a whole-virus influenza vaccine published in 1997 did not demonstrate a difference in efficacy between the initial vaccination and repeated annual vaccinations. However, subsequent observations have renewed an interest in this topic. To investigate whether a carryover effect of initial high-dose (HD) vaccination exists, researchers took advantage of second-year reenrollment offered to participants in a recent study that demonstrated higher antibody responses among adults aged ≥65 years who received a high-dose split-virus (IIV-HD) vaccine compared with a standard dose of same preparation (IIV-SD). This trial was supported by Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of IIV-HD.
