Capnography is a measure of ventilation, and its use for upper endoscopy was endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (without supporting evidence).
To assess the effectiveness of capnography in preventing sedation-related adverse outcomes during colonoscopy, investigators conducted a prospective, nonrandomized study, comparing outcomes in patients undergoing colonoscopy with fentanyl and midazolam sedation before institution of capnography (465 patients) versus after (501 patients). Patient discomfort and cost-effectiveness were also assessed. Results were as follows:
