Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a highly contagious eye infection that often involves conjunctival inflammation with edema, lacrimation, a foreign body sensation, and light sensitivity. The causative organism is commonly a human adenovirus (H AdV); serotypes 8, 19, and 37 are the most frequent agents identified.
On September 4, 2015, an ophthalmology practice notified the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health of 13 cases of EKC it had diagnosed in the preceding 3 weeks. A source investigation over the next 10 days revealed an additional 10 cases, of which 8 were practice-related, including 2 in practice employees.
